Crook Hall Wedding // Durham Wedding Photographer
Ahhh how gorgeous is Crook Hall!? I LURVE it there, not only is it gorgeous with beautiful gardens (even the secret ones), but the staff are amazing too! It’s so nice to be one of their recommended suppliers!
I had the total pleasure of photographing the wedding of Lucy and Jonathan over the summer, a gorgeous day which started at St Giles church and ended with crepes and live music and dancing in the gardens, amazing! (I was totally stuffed after the beautiful Afternoon Tea that these guys put on for me, but I still managed a salted Caramel Crepe, ohhh yeahhhhh).
Crook Hall and Gardens // Durham
“Both of us love the city of Durham: I (Lucy) was born there and it was the place my parents met and fell in love and were married themselves. So, when we were looking for venues, Durham made perfect sense to us as the setting for our day.
We instantly fell in love with Crook Hall on our first visit! It is such a unique venue, with all the quirky rooms and idyllic gardens to explore – we knew it was for us!
Our ceremony took place at the beautiful St. Giles – It was important to us to have a traditional church wedding, and we loved the classic feel of the building and stunning interior. Apparently, aside from the cathedral, it has the longest aisle in Durham, which I absolutely loved (it felt very ‘Sound of Music’ esque walking down with my train and long veil.)”
“I think we started out with a million ideas with no real theme per se, and everything just gradually took shape and evolved throughout the process.
We knew we wanted to do as much as we could ourselves, and have lots of personal touches to reflect us as a couple. We painted lots of the signs and decorations, and our family helped us create lots of our décor (e.g. Jonny’s Mum and Dad built the pub sign table names for the medieval hall and my mum made the bunting).
We also wanted to celebrate the summery and romantic rose garden setting, so we picked colours and flowers which reflected this, like the blush pink and sage green. Our florist created a wonderful focal point of the swing in the garden, and we chose cascading bouquets and natural-looking arrangements.
We wanted a fun and relaxed celebration, and Daz’s photography style suited this perfectly.
It was very personal, from coming to and from the ceremony in the wedding car with just us and my Dad, to eating afternoon tea with us and our guests.
We loved how comfortable we felt (even Jonny who usually really dislikes having his photo taken) and we genuinely enjoyed his company on the day. He magically managed to be everywhere and was so good at taking opportunities throughout the day to catch special moments.”
There are so many favourite parts of the day. Meeting each other at the end of the aisle might be a cliché, but it was such a magical moment for us both and the ceremony was so beautiful. Then there were the speeches which were so heartfelt and funny.
“Another thing that stands out for us was just how much fun everybody was having (including us) and dancing with family and friends was amazing!
Our band, Los Capitanes, played two sets, one outside under the woodland canopy, and later in the medieval hall. They have such a cool and unique style, and we just loved singing along and dancing all day!
We had also made our own playlist with our guests’ song choices. At the end of the night, the last song had finished, but all our guests carried on singing Oasis together. It was such a moment and definitely one we will remember forever.”
Tips for Future Couples
“Be prepared to adapt on the day and trust the people around you to help! We were intending on eating outside but of course there is just no way to guarantee the British weather (even in July!) I was so worried at first, when we had to make the decision to move our meal and some of the decorations inside. The staff at Crook Hall were absolutely incredible – they placed everything perfectly and the rooms looked beautiful.
Our guests got to explore the inside of the house and the speeches were just perfect in the hall. Not only that, but the lighting and atmospheric sky looks stunning in our photographs. The sun came out in the afternoon and everyone got out into the gardens, so we truly got the best of both!
Lots of people said this to us before the wedding but it is so true: make time for each other though out the day. It truly goes by in a blur so try to take in as much as you can and take some quiet moments together. Getting away with just Jonny and Daz, to walk in the allotments, or look at the view of the cathedral and castle, are some of my most treasured moments of the day.
