I absolutely love travelling for weddings and one of my favourite places so far has got the be Greece! Meg and Joe booked me to photograph their wedding in Zante, my first time on this island and it did not disappoint.
I think Greek weddings have it right, nice and quick ceremony, unreal weather and lovely food – followed by a party, all whilst never far away from the beach!
I always try to stay near my couples when I am travelling for a wedding, this lets me get there for prep without having to worry about travel in another country.
These guys had two villas to get ready in which were round the corner from my hotel, so I spent the morning with the boys and the girls before heading to the wedding venue in the boys mini bus, waiting for the girls to arrive!

Why It’s Worth It to Get Married in Greece on the Island of Zakynthos!
The location is one of the first things that couples think of when they begin to dream about their wedding day.
Greece is totally popular for weddings and Zakynthos is up there as most popular.
Organising a wedding overseas is a significant decision that inevitably raises concerns about expenses, logistics, and whether it’s worth making the long journey for a single day. However, the concept begins to make perfect sense when you consider a location like Zakynthos. It’s easy to understand why so many couples pick this island in the Ionian Sea as their backdrop—the breathtaking scenery, the friendly locals, and the opportunity to have both your wedding and honeymoon in one.
This article will examine the advantages of marrying in Greece, the unique charm of Zakynthos, the activities available there, and how the idea of getting married overseas can enhance your romantic journey.
Why Greece Is the Ideal Location for a Wedding
Greece continues to be a popular destination for engaged couples. It possesses an enduring blend of culture, history, and scenic beauty. Getting married in Greece is like stepping into a postcard for many people. Golden sunsets, azure seas, and whitewashed villages are almost clichés, but they are there for a reason.
The climate is yet another enormous advantage. You have a lot of options when it comes to selecting your date because of the long, warm summers and the mild spring and autumn seasons. Greece offers far greater chances of sunshine and clear skies than some northern European nations where rain is a constant worry.
The food comes next. Greek food is a highlight of any trip, and it’s even more delicious at a wedding reception. Mainstays include colourful salads, grilled meats, fresh seafood, and regional wines. A memorable touch is added to the celebration when you share this type of meal with your guests.
And lastly, Greece has a romantic feel. The nation is dotted with historic churches, romantic beaches, and ancient ruins. Almost everywhere you go, including Zakynthos, you can sense the romantic vibe.
Zakynthos: An Undiscovered Wedding Treasure
One of the Ionian Islands on Greece’s western coast is Zakynthos, also known as Zante. Compared to islands like Santorini or Mykonos, it is smaller and more tranquil, but that is part of its allure. It provides an amazing blend of accessibility, authenticity, and natural beauty.
Gorgeous Locations for Weddings
Zakynthos is a great choice for venues. Couples can exchange vows in charming chapels on cliffs, on private villas with expansive views, or on sandy beaches with the Ionian Sea behind them. Some couples opt for Cameo Island, a small islet that resembles a private paradise and is connected to Zakynthos by a wooden bridge. Others choose Navagio Beach, also called Shipwreck Beach, which is a more daring choice because it necessitates a boat trip.
Couples can choose from a variety of ceremony locations, including boutique hotels, vineyards, and olive groves. Zakynthos provides the background for a more sophisticated setup or barefoot simplicity.
A Calmer Ambience
Zakynthos has a more relaxed atmosphere than other well-known islands. There isn’t the same feeling of crowding that occasionally characterises weddings in Santorini. This enables you and your guests to take advantage of a more relaxed atmosphere that is ideal for the occasion, a slower pace, and more intimate surroundings.
Accessibility
Visitors from the UK, Europe, and beyond will find Zakynthos convenient because it has its own international airport. During the summer, a lot of low-cost airlines offer direct flights to the island, so friends and family don’t have to worry about the trip being difficult or costly.
Activities in Zakynthos
The fact that marriage abroad is about more than just the wedding day is one of its greatest advantages. You and your guests turn it into a vacation, spending more time together in a stunning setting. Whether your guests are staying for a week or just a long weekend, Zakynthos has a lot to offer.
Go to Shipwreck Beach, also known as Navagio Beach.
The island’s most well-known landmark is this one. There is an air of adventure because the cove, with its white sand, turquoise waters, and striking cliffs, can only be reached by boat. For wedding guests who wish to experience the famous Zakynthos, it is a must-see.
Investigate Blue Caves
Another highlight is visiting the Blue Caves by boat. Here, the water has a mystical quality that contrasts with the limestone rocks in vivid blue hues. For couples and their guests, it’s a memorable outing.
Observing Turtles in Laganas Bay
The endangered Caretta Caretta sea turtle can be found in Zakynthos. You and your guests can create amazing memories by taking a boat trip to observe them in their natural environment.
Olive Groves and Traditional Villages
The inland villages of Zakynthos are charming for those who like a slower pace. You can experience real island life by strolling down cobblestone streets, stopping by tiny tavernas, and tasting local wine or olive oil.
Beaches and leisure
There are many stunning beaches in Zakynthos beyond the well-known locations. Tsilivi, Kalamaki, and Gerakas Beach are well-liked spots for swimming and tanning. They provide the ideal chance to relax following the wedding festivities.
Dining and Nightlife
Zakynthos Town and Laganas offer a thriving nightlife scene with bars, restaurants, and music for visitors who like exciting evenings. Local tavernas offering meze, grilled fish, and traditional Greek fare will appeal to foodies.
Why It’s So Special to Get Married Abroad
Beyond the particulars of Zakynthos, it’s worthwhile to consider the concept of international marriage in general. Destination weddings are becoming more and more popular, and it’s easy to understand why.
Combining a honeymoon with a wedding
The fact that your honeymoon begins right away is among the most useful benefits. You’ve already arrived at your ideal location after exchanging vows. You can just unwind and enjoy your marriage without having to change your plans or go on another trip.
A Closer-Knit Guest List
Because not everyone can travel, overseas weddings are typically smaller. This is frequently a great advantage rather than a disadvantage. You’re surrounded by your closest friends and family, not a long list of distant relatives and plus-ones you hardly know. It’s a more memorable, meaningful, and intimate atmosphere.
A Holiday for All
Your guests will remember your wedding for years to come; it’s more than just a single day. Instead of being a single evening, it turns into a shared experience. Because they blend celebration, adventure, and leisure into one event, guests frequently remark that destination weddings are the most enjoyable they have ever been to.
Gorgeous Images and Recollections
The visual impact of a destination wedding is undeniable. The pictures are frequently stunning, capturing everything from the ceremony to the days spent exploring. Every photo from Zakynthos looks like it belongs in a magazine because of the breathtaking cliffs, golden sunsets, and crystal waters.
Reduction of Stress
It may surprise you to learn that planning a wedding overseas can occasionally be less stressful than doing so at home. In Zakynthos, a lot of locations and neighbourhood wedding coordinators provide packages that include everything from catering to photographers to flowers. A large portion of the organisation is taken care of for you by experts who are familiar with the local suppliers and traditions.
The Ambience of Weddings in Zakynthos
The atmosphere of a wedding on Zakynthos is one of the most difficult things to describe in words. It’s the way the light changes colour as the sun sets, the sound of the waves lapping against the coast, and the laughter of visitors who seem to be a part of something very special.
Imagine traversing a wooden bridge to Cameo Island while the sea envelops you and lanterns are strung overhead. Imagine exchanging vows on a precipice as the sun sets over the Ionian Sea. Another option is to celebrate in a rustic taverna with long tables, flowing Greek wine, and dancing music.
The island has a way of uniting people. It is simultaneously calming and enchanted. Long after the wedding is over, you can still remember that atmosphere.
Realistic Aspects
Of course, there are logistical considerations when organising a wedding overseas. Travel plans, paperwork, and how to make things simple for your guests are all things you’ll need to think about.
The good news is that international weddings are common in Greece, and Zakynthos in particular has skilled wedding planners who can help you with the legal requirements. Much of the process is streamlined, from planning the ceremony to making reservations for guests’ lodging.
It is less expensive for friends and family because flights and lodging are typically less expensive than in other Mediterranean locations. There is something for everyone on the island, with accommodations ranging from affordable apartments to opulent resorts.
Why Choose Zakynthos Among Other Greek Islands?
It’s reasonable to wonder why you might pick Zakynthos over other popular islands. Its balance holds the answer. Without the throngs of tourists or exorbitant costs associated with more well-known locations, it offers all the beauty and charm you could desire.
Although Santorini is well-known for its sunsets, Zakynthos has equally breathtaking views and a more laid-back atmosphere.
What distinguishes Zakynthos is its sense of authenticity and purity.
In conclusion
Getting married overseas is a risky but worthwhile choice. It turns your wedding into an experience that you and your guests will always remember, rather than just a day. Greece is already a popular destination because of its stunning scenery and rich cultural heritage, and Zakynthos stands out as a special gem within Greece.
Zakynthos provides the ideal backdrop for a destination wedding because of its breathtaking venues, easygoing charm, and abundance of activities. It’s a location where you can celebrate your love with the people who are most important to you, delicious food, and the beauty of nature.
Imagine your wedding day with the sun setting over the Ionian Sea, a warm breeze carrying laughter, and the knowledge that you have not only created a ceremony but also a lifelong memory. That is Zakynthos’s magic, and the reason so many couples are getting married on this charming island.
